Inspiration from Invictus
Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years in appalling conditions in three notorious prisons. To bear his suffering, he held on to the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley. A poem from which he drew hope and courage to stay close to himself, to remain “the master of his fate and the captain of his soul”.
